Climate Dashboard

Read any city's climate as a set of design decisions, not a pile of charts.

Reads an EnergyPlus Weather file and turns it into a climate brief: what the climate is, the numbers that matter, and a ranked list of what it asks of the building. Every finding links to the chart that proves it.

Using it

Load a climate file

Pick a station on the map or drop your own .epw. A OneBuilding .zip adds the STAT and DDY sidecars, but design conditions no longer need them — they come from the weather file's own header.

Read the brief

The climate named and classified, six headline numbers, a twelve-month strip showing when the building is under pressure, and design findings ranked by how strongly the data supports them. Each finding states a result, an action, and the measurement behind it.

Check the evidence

Four sections, organised by design question rather than by data type: heat and cold, sun and sky, wind, and water and humidity. Each opens on a single chart that answers the question, with the remaining charts behind More detail.

The hero of the heat section is the bioclimatic chart: the year's hours plotted on psychrometric axes against the comfort band, so you can see how far the climate sits from comfort and in which direction it misses.

Sharing a station

The station, layer and section all live in the address bar, so a link reopens exactly what you were looking at:

What the numbers rest on

  • Comfort is ASHRAE 55 adaptive comfort, with the 80% acceptability band. Hours outside the standard's stated validity range are reported as out of scope rather than graded.
  • Design conditions come from the weather file's own ASHRAE header. Percentiles of the file's 8760 rows are shown alongside them, labelled separately, because they are a different claim.
  • Sun positions honour the station's timezone, so azimuths are correct rather than rotated by fifteen degrees per hour of UTC offset.
  • Wind rose sectors follow meteorological convention, centred on their compass bearing.
  • Seasons are derived from the file's own monthly temperatures, so southern-hemisphere stations are not analysed upside down.
  • Köppen classification needs rainfall. Many TMYx files omit it, and the dashboard says so rather than guessing.

Tips

  • Do — Start on the Brief. The charts are there to check a finding, not to be read end to end.
  • Do — Use the closest station to your site; a city often has several.
  • Avoid — Mixing TMY (typical year) and AMY (actual year) files in the same comparison.
